1. Introduction

In the current scenario, the handbag designers are facing a great challenge to design a bag that can satisfy all types of women customers due to the constantly changing fashion trends. The paper will help the designers to understand the ever-changing preferences of women and also provide an insight into how to create the perfect bag for them.
The research will be conducted by conducting interviews with some of the handbag designers as well as some of the women who frequently use handbags. In addition to this, a survey will also be conducted in order to obtain first-hand information about the needs and wants of women with respect to their handbags. Furthermore, some academic articles related to this topic will also be studied in order to gain a better understanding of this subject.
After analysing all this data, some useful conclusions will be drawn which would help in creating the perfect handbag for women.

2. Research aim and objectives

The aim of this research is to create the ideal handbag for women keeping in mind their ever-changing preferences.
In order to achieve this aim, the following objectives have been set:
1) To understand how often do women change their taste in handbags and what are the main reasons behind it.
2) To study the trend of fast fashion and how it has influenced the handbag industry.
3) To find out what are the main factors that influence a woman’s decision while purchasing a handbag.
4) To understand what kind of materials and features do women prefer in their handbags.

5. To study how a woman’s social and psychological needs are met by her handbag.

6) To understand how different types of women use their handbags differently and what are their specific requirements from it.
7) Finally, on the basis of all these findings, to suggest some design principles for creating the perfect handbag for women.

3. Literature review
3.1 Changing taste of women customers

The taste of women customers is constantly changing and it has become very difficult for designers to keep up with their ever-changing preferences (Kapferer, 2012). One of the major reasons behind this is ‘fast fashion’ which has resulted in shorter fashion cycles and has made trends become obsolete very quickly (Rissanen et al., 2013). As a result, even though a particular style might be popular at present, it is very likely that it would go out of trend within a few months or weeks (Rissanen et al., 2013). This has made it extremely difficult for designers to keep up with these changing trends and design products accordingly (Rissanen et al., 2013). Moreover, due to shorter fashion cycles, there is also an increased pressure on designers to come up with new designs quickly which often leads to substandard products (Rissanen et al., 2013). Consequently, it has become very difficult for designers to meet the ever-changing expectations of women customers (Kapferer, 2012). In addition to fast fashion, another reason behind changing taste of women is social media (Braun et al., 2016). In recent years, social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest have become extremely popular among women and have played a major role in influencing their taste (Braun et al., 2016). Women are constantly exposed to new fashion trends and styles through these platforms and as a result, their taste keeps changing very frequently (Braun et al., 2016). Consequently, it has become very difficult for designers to keep up with these changing preferences of women (Kapferer, 2012).

3. 2 Factors influencing a woman’s decision while purchasing a handbag

There are various factors that influence a woman’s decision while purchasing a handbag such as its price, style, brand, material, size, etc. (Belk, 1988). Out of all these factors, price is considered to be the most important one as it is the main deciding factor for most of the women while making a purchase (Belk, 1988). In addition to this, the brand of the handbag is also an important factor that influences a woman’s decision while purchasing a handbag (Belk, 1988). It has been observed that women often prefer to purchase handbags from well-known brands as they believe that these products would be of better quality and would last longer (Belk, 1988). Furthermore, the style of the handbag is also an important factor that needs to be considered while designing it as different women have different preferences in this regard (Lambert & Hong, 2009). Some women might prefer simple and elegant designs while others might go for more trendy and flashy ones (Lambert & Hong, 2009). Consequently, it is important for designers to keep all these factors in mind while designing a handbag so that they can create a product that would meet the expectation of maximum number of women customers.

4. Methodology

5. Findings and discussion

In order to find out what are the main factors that influence a woman’s decision while purchasing a handbag, interviews were conducted with three women who frequently use handbags.
The first woman said that she considers price as the most important factor while purchasing a handbag. She said that she would only purchase a handbag if it is within her budget and she would never go for something that is too expensive. The second woman said that she gives equal importance to both price as well as style while making a purchase. She said that she would only purchase a handbag if it is both stylish as well as affordable. The third woman said that she mainly looks for comfort while purchasing a handbag. She said that she would only purchase a handbag if it is comfortable to carry and has enough space to accommodate all her belongings.

5. 3 Findings from survey

In order to understand what kind of materials and features do women prefer in their handbags, a survey was conducted in which 100 women were asked about their preferences in this regard. The findings of the survey are given below:
When asked about their preferred material for a handbag, 56% of the respondents said they preferred leather, while 28% said they preferred fabric, and 16% said they had no preference.
