The Effectiveness of Group Work in Addressing the Problem of Autism

1. Introduction

Our group was formed to discuss the issue of autism and to make decisions about possible ways to improve the situation with this mental disorder. The members of the group were B.N., S.A., A.S.. We decided to use Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning model as it seemed the most appropriate for our purposes.

2. Description of the group process

The first stage of our work was the free-floating interaction period when we got acquainted with each other and started discussing the problem of autism. We were trying to find common ground and reach agreement about the main points of the problem. Then we moved on to the decision-making stage when we formulated several possible solutions to the problem and chose the most feasible one. Finally, we evaluated our work as a group and made conclusions about the efficiency of our collaboration.

During the free-floating interaction period, we mostly used verbal communication, but sometimes we also used nonverbal cues such as facial expressions and gestures. We took turns speaking, but we also listened to each other carefully and paid attention to body language.
