The Different Approaches to Creative Intelligence
The mental processes that lead to creative intelligence can be seen as a journey. It involves the use of different cognitive skills, moves from one stage to another, and is often non-linear. According to Sternberg (1999), there are three main stages in the journey:
– The first stage is the generation of new ideas, also known as divergent thinking. This is when we come up with lots of different ideas, without worrying too much about whether they are good or not.
– The second stage is the evaluation of these ideas, also known as convergent thinking. This is when we start to weed out the bad ideas and focus on the good ones.
– The third stage is the implementation of these ideas, also known as creative problem solving. This is when we take our good ideas and turn them into reality.
There are many different approaches that can be taken in each stage of the journey. In this essay, I will be discussing the five forces framework, mental models, decision making, and group dynamics. I will also be offering my own insights on how these approaches can be used in order to come up with good decisions that will ultimately suit the organization.
2. The five forces framework
The five forces framework was developed by Michael Porter in 1979. It is a tool that can be used to analyze an industry and understand the relative attractiveness of that industry. The five forces are:
– Threat of new entrants: How easy is it for new firms to enter the industry? If it is easy, then there will be more competition and it will be harder for existing firms to make profits. On the other hand, if it is difficult for new firms to enter the industry, then existing firms will have more power and can charge higher prices.
– Bargaining power of buyers: How much power do buyers have? If buyers have a lot of power, then they can bargain for lower prices from sellers. On the other hand, if sellers have more power, then they can charge higher prices from buyers.
– Threat of substitutes: What are the alternatives to the product or service that is being offered? If there are good substitutes available, then customers will switch to them if they are not satisfied with what is being offered by existing firms. This will put downward pressure on prices and make it harder for firms to make profits.
– Bargaining power of suppliers: How much power do suppliers have? If suppliers have a lot of power, then they can bargain for higher prices from buyers. On the other hand, if buyers have more power, then they can negotiate for lower prices from suppliers.
– Rivalry among existing competitors: How intense is rivalry among existing firms in the industry? If rivalry is intense, then firms will be fighting for market share and profits will be lower. On the other hand, if rivalry is not so intense, then firms will be able to cooperate and collude with each other, which can lead to higher profits.
The five forces framework can be used in the divergent thinking stage to generate new ideas. For example, if we are trying to come up with new ideas for products or services, we can use the framework to analyze the industry and understand what needs to be done in order to make our product or service more attractive than the alternatives. We can also use the framework to understand the bargaining power of different stakeholders, and this can help us to come up with strategies for dealing with them.
3. Mental models
Mental models are simplified representations of reality that help us to understand and deal with the world around us. They are often based on our past experiences and the information that we have been exposed to. We use mental models all the time, without even realizing it. For example, when we drive a car, we are using a mental model of how a car works. This mental model is not 100% accurate, but it is good enough for us to be able to drive the car safely.
Mental models can be useful in the divergent thinking stage, because they can help us to generate new ideas. For example, if we are trying to come up with new ideas for products or services, we can use mental models to understand the needs of our target market. We can also use mental models to understand how our product or service fits into the existing market landscape. This can help us to come up with innovative ideas that are differentiated from what is already available.
4. Decision making
Decision making is the process of choosing between two or more options. There are many different approaches that can be taken in decision making, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

This approach assumes that decision makers are rational beings who make decisions by analyzing all of the available information and choosing the option that is most likely to lead to the desired outcome.
