His father, Mohammed bin Laden, was a construction guru who had close ties to the Saudi ruling class. Osama bin Laden inherited a large fortune when his father died in 1967. He went on to study Islam at university and became interested in radical ideas. In the late 1970s, he joined the mujahideen in Afghanistan and became a leader of al-Qaeda.
