Habitat for Humanity is an international organization that provides affordable housing to low-income families. The organization was founded in 1976 by Jimmy Carter, and today operates in over 70 countries around the world. Habitat for Humanity's mission is to provide "safe, decent, and affordable shelter for all". In the United States, Habitat for Humanity works to address the issue of affordable housing by building homes and selling them to low-income families at cost. Families are required to put in 500 hours of "sweat equity" work on their home, as well as attend financial education classes. Mortgage payments are based on a variant of inflation, and are structured so that they do not increase more than 1% per year. In addition, Habitat for Humanity offers an adjustable rate mortgage product which allows families to make lower monthly payments in the early years of their mortgage, and then gradually
