The protagonist, Dmitry Gurov, is a middle-aged man who is bored with his life and has been having an affair with a married woman. One day, he meets a young woman named Anna Sergeyevna who has come to Yalta with her family. Dmitry is immediately attracted to her, but he does not want to get involved with another married woman.
