Elderly Woman Attacked and Killed by Neighbor in Asheville

In the early morning hours of December 4, an elderly woman in the Crowell Square Court complex in Asheville, North Carolina was attacked by her neighbor. The victim, Margaret Jones Cable, was assaulted with a blunt object and later died of her injuries at Mission Hospital. Her neighbor, Rebecca Ruth Krueger, was arrested and charged with assault. Krueger was later charged with voluntary manslaughter after Cable died from her injuries.

Asheville police responded to a call from Cable’s daughter at approximately 3:00 a.m. They found Cable suffering from severe head trauma and she was rushed to Mission Hospital. Cable died of her injuries at approximately 5:00 a.m. Krueger was arrested at her home without incident and has been cooperative with police.

Krueger told police that she had been drinking earlier in the evening and does not remember what happened after she went to bed. She said that she awoke to find Cable’s body in her apartment and called 911. Krueger has no previous criminal history.

The motive for the attack is not known at this time, but detectives are investigating whether or not Krueger may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.
